1996 - Annunciation of a Space |
Catalog TextsAnnunciation (Building) of a space
In these paintings the ochre, brown, orange and black are predominant. At first glance, the unwary viewer perhaps glimpsed in them shades of the black continent - not just the ubiquitous telluric element but also the flora and fauna that, in the breadth of the savannah, become mingled. However, Teresa Ribeiro did not have in mind to create an African memorial. Only the annunciation of a space: in an obvious dialogue between trace and colour, two elements that distinguish this creation. It's painting in its purest form that is presented to us here. Keeping present her connections to her recent past, the artist purified her style, in what is the biggest qualitative leap since she left tapestry to dedicate herself to painting. The experience and mixture of techniques attained from her previous works gave shape to the present cycle, where the essence of shapes is one of the dominant features. It was an enduring work, as the painter confided. The meticulous care used in the approach of space, which produces a surprising aesthetic effect, manifests itself in the rigour applied to the alliance of line with colour, in the dramatic contrast between flat and textured surfaces and the wise interplay between long and quick curves, and between them and the lines. It should be noted that, intentionally or not, in some works vague anatomical shapes (actually more sensed than seen), offer to these paintings a gentle hint of recognition - however desired by the viewer of the abstract work and, why not, desirable.
